Jackie Shroff's controversial kiss with the cool Zeenat Aman: 1984
The Controversial Jackie Shroff and Zeenat Aman Stardust Annual Cover (1984)In 1984, Stardust magazine - known for its bold, gossipy, and often provocative style - dropped one of Bollywood’s most talked-about covers of the era. The Stardust Annual featured a striking image of veteran actress Zeenat Aman and rising star Jackie Shroff in an intimate, kissing pose. The chemistry crackled: Zeenat, the established sex symbol and fashion icon of the 1970s-80s, paired with the handsome, dapper newcomer Jackie (fondly called Jaggu Dada). The cover captured raw sensuality and fearlessness that felt very 1980s - unapologetic glamour amid a more conservative film industry.
Lip kisses (even in photos) were extremely rare in mainstream Bollywood during the 1980s. On-screen romance usually stayed within hugs, necking, or cheek kisses, with heavy censorship and societal norms. This cover triggered a storm. It was seen as scandalous, bold, and boundary-pushing. Moral outrage followed in some circles, with debates about decency, the influence of film magazines, and the sexualization of stars. Even decades later, reposts of the cover occasionally draw moral policing.
The cover generated huge buzz and likely boosted Stardust’s sales and visibility. It cemented the magazine’s reputation for fearless journalism and imagery. For Jackie Shroff, then an emerging actor, it added to his image as a charismatic, daring star. Zeenat Aman, already known for breaking norms with her Western-influenced style and roles, reinforced her status as a trailblazer unafraid of controversy.
No major legal consequences (like FIRs) appear to have followed - this was pre-social media and a different regulatory era. The backlash was more societal and media-driven “online fury” of its time: whispers, debates in film circles, and conservative disapproval, but nothing that derailed careers. Both stars continued successful journeys - Zeenat as an icon, Jackie as a beloved leading man.
The image remains iconic today, often shared as a symbol of 1980s Bollywood’s bold undercurrent. It highlighted tensions between glamour, censorship, and changing norms, much like later controversies (e.g., Ranveer Singh’s nude shoot). In an era of buttoned-up cinema, this cover said: “Deal with it.” It still sparks conversation for its unapologetic vibe.
