The awakening: Salman Khan in Maine Pyar Kiya

Its been 36 years since Maine Pyar Kiya released... Salman Khan was just 24 when he shot the film.

Maine Pyar Kiya was the highest-grossing Indian film of 1989 and the highest-grossing Hindi film of the 1980s. Made on a budget of around ₹2 crore, it earned over ₹28–30 crore domestically (and over ₹45 crore worldwide), making it one of the biggest all-time blockbusters in Indian cinema history relative to its production cost.

For many, those shirtless scenes, the famous poster of shirtless, hairy, fuzzy-chested Salman Khan in just jeans, unzipped jeans no less, with a full clad leading lady... was soooo iconic and... an awakening for a generation.

So many fans were breathless when they saw him.. He was sooo cute. sooo hot.

The Younger Hero and Mature Heroine: Bollywood rarity

Young women with older men is the standard trope of Bollywood, Hollywood... ever wood, any wood, every wood.

Here's a comical but very real statistic;

Category	Frequency	Common Age Gap Range
Actress Older than Actor	~2% – 3%	Typically 1 to 5 years (Rarely 10+ years)
Actor Older than Actress	~97%	Typically 5 to 25+ years

But the younger guy, older woman combo - rare. So rare, we can count the number of film sin one hand...

So how about these hot shots instead?

Screen Pairing	Senior Partner & DOB	Junior Partner & DOB	Age Gap	Notable Collaboration
Mumtaz & Salman Khan	Mumtaz (July 31, 1947)	Salman Khan (December 27, 1965)	18 years, 5 months	Majhdhaar (1996)
Aishwarya Rai & Ranbir Kapoor	Aishwarya Rai (November 1, 1973)	Ranbir Kapoor (September 28, 1982)	8 years, 11 months	Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)
Rekha & Shekhar Suman	Rekha (October 10, 1954)	Shekhar Suman (December 7, 1962)	8 years, 2 months	Utsav (1984)
Madhuri Dixit & Akshaye Khanna	Madhuri Dixit (May 15, 1967)	Akshaye Khanna (March 28, 1975)	7 years, 10 months	Mohabbat (1997)
Zeenat Aman & Jackie Shroff	Zeenat Aman (November 19, 1951)	Jackie Shroff (February 1, 1957)	5 years, 2 months	Bandhan Kuchchey Dhaagon Ka (1983)
Kareena Kapoor & Arjun Kapoor	Kareena Kapoor (September 21, 1980)	Arjun Kapoor (June 26, 1985)	4 years, 9 months	Ki & Ka (2016)

• Mumtaz & Salman Khan: The widest age gap in this set. Mumtaz stepped out of her long-standing hiatus to share screen space in Esmayeel Shroff's Majhdhaar, filmed in the early 1990s.

• Aishwarya Rai & Ranbir Kapoor: Karan Johar leveraged their nearly 9-year age difference directly into the narrative of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, creating an intense onscreen dynamic between an older poetess and a younger protagonist.

• Rekha & Shekhar Suman: Shekhar Suman made his silver screen debut opposite Rekha in Girish Karnad's erotic period drama Utsav (1984), adapted from the ancient Sanskrit play Mrichchhakatika.

• Madhuri Dixit & Akshaye Khanna: Paired in Pankaj Parashar's romantic drama Mohabbat (1997), Akshaye Khanna was in his early twenties debuting shortly after his father Vinod Khanna's era, while Madhuri Dixit was at the peak of her stardom.

• Zeenat Aman & Jackie Shroff: Appearing together early in Jackie Shroff's leading career following Hero (1983), the duo shared notable screen presence in action-dramas like Bandhan Kuchchey Dhaagon Ka and later Aakhri Adaalat (1988).

• Kareena Kapoor & Arjun Kapoor: R. Balki intentionally cast the pair in Ki & Ka (2016) to subvert traditional gender roles, pairing a corporate career woman with a younger homemaker husband.

Narrative-Driven Age Gap (May-December / Reverse Age-Gap Plots)

In these films, the age difference was an explicit plot point where an older woman falls in love with or mentors a younger man:

• Dil Chahta Hai (2001): Dimple Kapadia played an older, divorced woman who becomes the love interest/muse of Akshaye Khanna's character.

• Wake Up Sid (2009): Konkona Sen Sharma played an older, independent career woman opposite a younger, carefree Ranbir Kapoor.

• Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996): Rekha played the formidable Maya, who shares a central, romantic/sensual dynamic with a younger Akshay Kumar.

• Maya Memsaab (1993): Deepa Sahi starred opposite a younger Shah Rukh Khan.

• B.A. Pass (2013): Shilpa Shukla played an older woman seducing a younger man in a neo-noir setup.

Pre fame Salman Khan: Young, thin, skinny sexy Salu

As a young male model and champion swimmer, Salman Khan always had a tight, taut, lean body. And that perfect photogenic face. And he was always so damn cute and ... hottt! Then he got real fit for MPK. And never looked back. But we miss his innocence. Now he's looking older and paired with young actresses, looking worse for wear. we miss the glory days. 90s Salman Khan was unbeatable. SBM icon.
