Hemant Birje: The Indian Tarzan: TBT to 80s

Hemant Birje was the og fitness male model in India in the 1980s. He looked so hot, tan, taut in the Indian-ised, Bollywood-ised version of Tarzan.

But the acting chops were just not there. After the hit film, the leading lady--kimi kattkar--took off while Birje floundered. Now he's 60 - he was just 20 when he made Tarzan and was just the hottest man alive.

He blames nepo kids, film industry politics and everything else under the son for his lack of success in movies. Well, weak dialogue delivery, no acting chops per se, no dancing (a requirement in Bollywood!) and quite frankly, no movie star charm... He was just a tall good looking man, who didn't deliver a single hit after that film. He's appeared in 34 Indian films - can you name any apart from Tarzan?! Exactly. The industry accepts only success, otherwise all fade> Happens to outsiders and nep babies in equal measure. Deliver, or drop out!

Bollywood's Sex Symbols: Kimit Katkar and Hemant Birje in Indian Tarzan!

In the 80s, this skin show was everything! The closest thing to an 'adult' film I ever saw, there was an entire generation who dremed of these two. Some of us dreamted more of Hemant in the loincloth than others...

India's version of Tarzan, an almost frame to frame copy - with the bonus of Bollywood songs of course. A distinctly B film - but it made a hell of a lot of money.

God we had the biggest crush on him back in the day. We knew then...

While many were looking at bikini top clad Kimi Katkar, the Indian Marilyn Monroe - just gorgeous, light eyed beauty...  We were all for loincloth clad hottie Hemant Birje.

A poor remake of the Hollywood version of Tarzan, it was a blockbuster in the mid 80s.

India's Tarzan: Hemant Birje: 80s hunk and model

Mahurat - launch - of the Hindi retelling of Tarzan on March 28, 1985, director B Subhash!

For the title role the producer and director was looking for a new boy with a tough body and a soft face and despite calls from A-list stars wanting to play the part, Subhash settled for Hemant Birje who worked with a security outfit. After three months of training, he looked like a convincing ape man. “Hemant used to be a shy, young boy who for a particular scene got badly beaten up by the action director and the stuntmen. He showed me the scratches and bruises on his back and told me that now his captivity in the circus would look natural and convincing," recalls Subhash.

Hemant Birje and Kimi Katkar were the sexiest on screen couple of Bollywood in the mid 80s. All their shoots were so hot and sexy.

How strange to hear that Hemant was in fact quite shy - but he was like rarely dressed in any of his films or shoots. So hot. Such an amazing body. This is pre gym era and the fad of muscle men in Bollywood.

Hemant Brije at 55

A fan of SBM sent us this; 80s hunk Hemant Birje - India's own Tarzan -  is now 55. Still fit.

TBT: India's Tarzan: Hemant Birje

So Hemant Birje was such a part of our - and many of India's - sexual awakening in Tarzan. Tall, buff, chocolate brown hunk, so fit, so hot, so not shy on camera - he had such an amazing body in Tarzan and was perfect for the role. We used to totally dream about him and sing that Tarzan my Tarzan song in our head to Alisha Chinoy's sexy saucy voice. Oh yeah and Kimi Katkar was rather hot too.

Even with his shirt on - he was so handsome. Was he a model in the 80s?

Indian Tarzan

We used to dream about Hemant Birje in the 80s. He was so fit. So gorgeous. the man with the tan. and that tiny loincloth look of his in the film! Some liked Kimi Katkar's minimal clothes, others, of hunky Tarzan. Er different strokes! ;)

Heard they were planning to remake the film - and they tried to get Vidyut or Abhinav Shukla for it - but both didn't bite. New age Tarzan anyone?!

The Indian Tarzan: Hemant Birje

Our earliest memory of a semi-clad hunk in Bollywood, gorgeous hot man with a tan, Hemant Birje in Tarzan.. He was our everything back in the day. shame he couldn't recreate the box office success of his first film. he was fit as hell back then too

Our desi Tarzan Hemant Birje

oh I used to find this hunk soooo hot. Hemant Birje in those tiny little fabric loin-cloth things as Indian Tarzan. the film is laughably bad. but he was sooo hot.

Bollywood's Tarzan, Hemant Birje

whoa. serious throwback. don't judge us but back in the dazaaay, we had the biggest hot chocolate crush on Bollywood's Tarzan, Hemant Birje! he was fit as fk. hot and brown. we saw the film on youtube recently and yeah, it was pretty damn bad. but he was still hella hot. Hemant Birje

Hemant Birje as Tarzan in the 80s turned us on Bigggggg time. showing the male body as a sexual being was so rare in the 80s. this was as hot as it got back then. a terrible film (the original Hollywood one was no prize either) but sooo hot. vintage bollywood hunks only at http://shirtlessbollywoodmen.blogspot.com/

Hemant Birje

In the Indian version of Tarzan, Hemant Birje essayed the title role. he was hot. well, kinda.

Movie made Kimi Katkar a star. Him... not so much.
