The Merchant Ivory tell all documentary: did they just publicly out Ismail Merchant?!

 

Did they finally 'out' Ismail Merchant (born Ismail Noor Muhammad Abdul Rahman)????

Born in 1936, when it was still a crime to be... different, we all knew Merchant and Ivory were more than just business partners but we never spoke about it and looked they other way. 

As Guardian says, " “Oh, they were authentic all right,” he says. “They clashed a lot.” The authenticity extended to their sexuality. The subject was not discussed while Merchant was alive and for some time after: “You have to remember that Ismail was an Indian citizen living in Bombay, with a deeply conservative Muslim family,” Ivory told me in 2018. But the pair were open to those who knew them. “I never had a sense of guilt,” Ivory says, pointing out that the crew on The Householder referred to him and Merchant as “Jack and Jill”.

Well, I hope he found love and some happiness. We are lucky to be born in this time and to live through... what we all lived through... 

LGBTQ representation matters. It gives so many hope. That we aren't born to these damned lives of unfulfilled love forever.

Most of it is wildly pretentious and just awful writing and delivery but then I do understand it was made on a meagre budget. Some gorgeous guys from the Mumbai scene in the early 90s are in the movie. Its slow burn.  

 

BTW watching Kushal Punjabi made us a bit sad. He was such a lovely person. And that hot guy next door vibe about him. And he seemed so happy and always smiling... little did we know.

Ok its not great, but compared to a lottttttttt of g a y crap films, its not bad - and at least its a start. 

I mean at the moment there are so few decent LGBTQ+ films out in Bollywood My Brother Nikhil, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha, Loev, Shubh Mangal Jyada Sawdhan, and the truly flawless (but heartbreaking ) Aligarh, Kapoor and Sons. .. er... are there others? 

Digital platform might be the way to go for future LGBTQ+ short and feature films.
