The awakening: Salman Khan in Maine Pyar Kiya
Its been 36 years since Maine Pyar Kiya released... Salman Khan was just 24 when he shot the film.
Vidyut Jammwal's third act: Hollywood!
We got an offer to interview him for his recent film promotions and we passed as we know what he's like already.
Read somewhere that even in romantic scenes, Vidyut Jammwal looks like he's going to kick the girl - not kiss the girl! He always looks mildly irritated, his range as an actor has been... limited. Hey, if it didn't stop the career of Tiger, why should it stop VJ?!Lets take a quick look back at this action hero's career so far.
Vidyut was a Gladrags model who first found success down south as a villain. The handsome, gorgeous hunk, the body beautiful found success later in life in Bollywood.
In fact, his career of hits and flops have been sporadic. Long gaps between one hit and another - but again, Sunny Deol has massive gaps between blockbusters and the senior citizen still has a career so...
Vidyut's last commercially successful theatrical film was the spy thriller IB71 (2023), which performed decently at the box office and earned praise for its grounded action and production values. His last outright box-office hit in theaters before that was Commando 3 (2019).
Age: 45 years old (born December 10, 1980).
Top 3 Successful Films:
Commando 3 (2019): His highest-grossing film as a solo action lead.
Force (2011): His breakout debut role as the antagonist Vishnu, which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
Commando: A One Man Army (2013): The film that cemented his status as a premier martial-arts action hero in Hindi cinema.
The Infamous Exchange with Anupama Chopra
Vidyut Jammwal’s public dynamic with Film Companion host Anupama Chopra became a talking point during the peak of Bollywood’s insider-versus-outsider debate around mid-2020. The tension flared up when Disney+ Hotstar held a high-profile virtual press conference to announce seven major films releasing directly on their platform. While stars like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt were invited to represent their projects, Jammwal—whose film Khuda Haafiz was part of the same slate—was notably left off the invite list.
Taking to social media, Jammwal called out the ecosystem, pointing out that two out of seven titles received zero notification or representation, dryly observing that the cycle of gatekeeping continues. When the discussion subsequently moved to media platforms like Film Companion, the exchange between Jammwal and Anupama Chopra became a focal point for how trade journalists handle non-dynastic talent.
During their interviews, the underlying friction was palpable. Today, we are not sure who came off worse for wear. Vidyut is hardly a classically trained actor, one of the critics pointed out, he's like a really good looking stunt man, not a hero per se. The acting, and dialogue delivery or emotional gravitas is gravely missing.
When pressed on the mechanics of nepotism, Jammwal rejected coded industry jargon and polite media framing. He bypassed diplomatic answers, comparing the experience of an outsider in mainstream Hindi cinema to a beggar knocking on a luxury car window—constantly acknowledged only as an outsider rather than evaluated on skill.
The interview resonated widely online because Jammwal openly challenged the subtext of the host's questions, refusing to play along with softball industry talking points. The tension resurfaced in subsequent years when Jammwal publicly backed audience criticism against negative trade reviews of his self-produced film IB71, further solidifying his stance as an actor at war with traditional Bollywood gatekeeping.
Flip the coin, and he also provided frustrated answers, not getting the point, his own lack of self-reflection and overhyping himself 'as the top action star' according to Google (his understanding of algorithms and the comforting answers search engines provide based on biased archival patterns is limited at best, non-existent in truth). He didn't answer the questions foisted upon him by the erudite Chopra, and she wasn't keen to entertain his ludicrous assertions on his own greatness. It was such a comical tussle, the internecine left audiences laughing - and rolling their eyes.
Vid has a sophomoric side to him that cannot be denied, of showing off for easy applause... pandering to his audience of incels. His 'look at me backflip' clip... and then faceplanting... there is no gif that's a greater summary of his career so far and at his attempts at superstardom. You do not become Shahrukh Khan overnight son, you need to work at it for decades.
We are fans of his looks... but the EQ and IQ are sorely lacking. BTW how his brief engagement and dalliance with heiress Nandita Mehtani is beyond me. Kahaan woh shehron ki malqin, kahaan yeh Jhoomritaliya.... When the socialite met the king of fights.
Well, its not too much of a surprise, she always had exquisite taste in boyfriends; all have been hotties like Dino Morea, Ranbir (allegedly) Vidyut...
What's Coming Up
Street Fighter: Jammwal is slated to make his Hollywood debut portraying the iconic character Dhalsim in the upcoming live-action feature adaptation. The bald and the dutiful, lets see if he can deliver

The hunks of Bollywood in the 90s: Rahul Roy, Prithvi,
The 90s had a strange habit of introducing heroes who looked absolutely ready for stardom… and then quietly losing them somewhere along the way.
Rahul Roy arrived with Aashiqui and became a phenomenon overnight. Those long locks alone probably launched a thousand hairstyles. Ronit Roy had Jaan Tere Naam, a silver-jubilee hit, yet famously went months without a single film offer.
Prithvi Vazir had Dil Ka Kya Kasoor with Divya Bharti, while Avinash Wadhawan had the face, the romance, the songs and films like Ayee Milan Ki Raat, Junoon, Geet and Balmaa.
And then there was Armaan Kohli, who actually had Deewana before Shah Rukh Khan stepped into it. He was also considered for Baazigar. Imagine that alternate Bollywood universe.
Five faces. Five very different stories. One deliciously frustrating decade.
Because the 90s didn’t just create stars.
It also left behind an entire gallery of “arre yaar, these guys could have been huge!”
And perhaps that is why we still remember them. Not merely for what they became, but for what we once thought they were going to become.
Our note:
That's an interesting take but here's ours; they made bad choices in flop films. The industry puts up with everything - except box office failure. At some point you have to deliver the goods - put butts on seats. Which none could do despite a great launch. Great music and great leading ladies. One flop after another. Trouble is they had the look but limited talent. Weak voices, poor diction, sloppy dancing... they looked great on the big screen, but that's about it.
BTW - who was your fav? Among this lot? For sure speedo-clad Ronit Roy. He was tall handsome and fit as hell... that body beautiful and he was so cute. the guy next door...
